Jeremy Jordan will star in Newsies on Broadway

ArtsBeat reports: Clyde died, but Jeremy Jordan will live again on Broadway as Jack Kelly, the rabble-rousing newsboy and leading role in the musical Newsies.

To no one’s surprise, Disney Theatrical Productions announced yesterday that Mr. Jordan, who earned admiring notices when the show played the Paper Mill Playhouse this summer, will star in the Broadway production, which opens at the Nederlander Theater on March 15.

Mr. Jordan appeared in Newsies while rehearsing for the Broadway run of Bonnie & Clyde, which opened and closed quickly last fall. (His character, Clyde Barrow, was stopped in his tracks in a hail of bullets, but Mr. Jordan emerged with good reviews.) He also stars opposite Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in Joyful Noise, a movie opening today.

There was no word on further Newsies casting yesterday. The show, based on the flop 1992 film which starred Christian Bale as Jack Kelly, is slated to play for what Disney calls a “strictly limited” 101-performance run, though it’s widely expected to go longer if it’s a hit.
