Newsies heads to Broadway

The musical adaptation of hit Disney movie Newsies is headed for the Great White Way, reports the New York Times.

The Harvey Fierstein-adapted stage production enjoyed a successful fall run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, so the scruffy paperboys are packing up their floppy caps and tattered vests and heading to Broadway.

The turn-of-the-century musical will open on Broadway in March, Disney Theatrical Productions announced Tuesday. Newsies will play at the Nederlander Theatre through June, but if successful, the run could be extended.

The 1992 movie starred Christian Slater, Bill Pullman, Robert Duvall and Ann-Margret, and it’s become a bit of a cult classic for children of the early '90s. [Editorial confession: I've never seen it].

Newsies is based on the 1899 true story of newspaper-selling kiddos fighting Big Business, and with movements like Occupy Wall Street resonating with the public, it’s great timing for the feisty premise.
