John Mayer cancels tour

ArtsBeat reports: Four and a half months after undergoing surgery to remove a growth from his vocal cords, John Mayer said on his blog on Friday that the condition had returned and he had no choice but to “take an indefinite break from live performing.”

Mr. Mayer, known for his acoustic rock and blues songs, said he was canceling a tour to promote his new album that was to have begun on April 9 in Bloomington, Ind. The album, Born and Raised, is still to be released by Columbia Records on May 22.

On his Tumblr, Mr. Mayer, 34, said he decided to go back to his throat doctor on Wednesday after “something didn’t feel/sound right” during a rehearsal. He was told a granuloma – a mass of tissue that forms in response to infection – had appeared in the same spot where a surgeon had removed another growth in late October.

“This is bad news,” he wrote. “Because of this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down.”

Mr. Mayer said he would have to undergo surgery a second time and rest his voice. But he vowed not to let the setback keep him from writing material for a new album. “I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there’s no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring,” he said.

Mr. Mayer, who released the new albums first single “Shadow Days” to iTunes last week, added that he felt “emotionally burnt out” after receiving the news. “Nothing feels worse that having to break the stage down before the performance, and I mean nothing,” he said.

--> Poor guy. He's turned out to be somewhat of a douche bag, but the boy can sing. As chance would have it, I was just listening to his Room for Squares album this morning.
