Hurricane Irene first major storm of the season to hit US
NBC Miami reports: Irene was expected to become a major Category 3 hurricane later Tuesday or Wednesday and was on a direct path to hit the Bahamas and mostly avoid South Florida, officials at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Tuesday.
As of 8 a.m., Irene was a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph as it moved west-northwest at 10 mph about 70 miles southeast of Grand Turk Island.
Irene was lashing the northern coast of the Dominican Republic early Tuesday and was expected to intensify once it cleared the coast, according to Stacy Stewart, a senior hurricane specialist at the NHC.
Stewart said Irene could become a Category 4 as it was expected to head through the Bahamas early Thursday.
