Recommendations: The News Lounge

[Editor's note] I'm the worst kind of Miami resident there is. I don't really do anything outdoors or on water. I rarely, if ever, go to the beach. And if I go to one more gay club, I'm gonna Yamo-burn the place down. I'm basically an unsatisfied, relentless complainer who focuses on everything this city lacks.

Well, I write this recommendation as a corrected queen.

Last Saturday night, my crumbling faith in Miami was somewhat restored. That's because I was invited to a great new joint called the News Lounge. Located squarely in the middle of 55th Street Station (a converted old train depot), this place is a nice alternative to the regular Miami hangouts.

Walking in, one is struck by the modern but cozy décor. Naked mannequins populate the second floor indoor balcony and posters of Edith Piaf hang in dark corners. They have a beautiful indoor bar, a cool lounge and mirror room, and an outdoor garden courtyard complete with a coy pond fountain. They also have two outdoor pool tables, large video screens, swings, and bed for lounging. They offer a small appetizer and tapas menu that seemed to go over like gangbusters with those that ordered. I didn't try the food.

I did, however, veer away from my regular V&T and had a Scotch and soda at the behest of a very simpatico waiter. Admittedly, it was a little pricier than what I'm used to, but the waiter was cute (and not shy about flittering with me) so I didn't mind too much.

In short, the News Lounge is gonna be my new hangout. It wonderfully brings together the charm of a local dive bar, the relaxed atmosphere of a lounge, and the energy of a dance floor.

Check out their website for happy hour specials and upcoming art installations.
