Superman comic goes digital for Apple devices

ArtsBeat reports: DC Comics, the home of Superman, has announced two digital publishing and distribution initiatives. The company has teamed up with comiXology to produce a DC Comics App and store for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices.

Digital versions of DC Comics will also be available on the Sony PlayStation Network and the Comics by comiXology app and Web site. The PlayStation platform opens with more than 80 comics and will add more than 50 issues per month, while comiXology begins with more than 100 titles and will add another 100 per month.

Both platforms share a tiered pricing structure of 99 cents to $2.99 per issue. Newsarama.com has a list of the issues currently available, including two free comics that tell the origin stories of Superman and Batman.

Despite industry concerns that digital comics could cannibalize sales of their print counterparts, DC will offer new issues of Justice League: Generation Lost, a biweekly series, at the same time (and at the same price) they are available in stores.

DC is also offering a free 10-page preview of Superman No. 700, which starts a new storyline called “Grounded,” written by J. Michael Straczynski, that finds the Man of Steel walking across America to reconnect with the people he’s sworn his life to protect. “Grounded” will include an essay contest in which the winner’s town will get a visit from Superman.
