American Idol: Post #22

Before the show started last night, someone told me that I couldn't have the American president I wanted AND the American Idol, too. Well, how right they were. As you've undoubtedly already heard, Adam Lambert did not win last night.

In what I consider to be the upset of the decade, Adam Lambert lost a talent competition to Kris Allen-- further proving that America's cultural and musical taste stops at Jimmy Buffet. It's not that I think Kris is not a talent in his own right. But when unfairly compared to Lambert, Kris is just another corn-fed hick strumming a guitar in his garage. Lambert was robbed. Lambert's fans were robbed.

When all is said and done though, I take comfort in knowing that Kris will follow in the grand tradition of Ruben Studdard, Taylor Hicks, and Fantasia B. All Idol winners and all career losers. Kris will fade away like yesterday's hangover. This isn't sour grapes, it's a fact. We know it now, the rest of America will know it later. Like I said yesterday, Kris is already in Adam's shadow.

I also take comfort in knowing that Lambert has a long, exciting career ahead of him-- free of that awful Kara DioGuardi song. E! asked Lambert what his goals are now after the show:

"My dream now is to make a really dope record. Do something new. Push the boundaries a little bit. Push people's buttons. Open people's minds up a little bit. If there's anything that can come from this experience I hope that all the fans out there can pick up that even if you're really different there's a way to get along with each other. We did the Queen duet and we made it work because we found a common ground with each other."
Blasphemous results aside, the 2 hour finale show was an enjoyable spectacle of epic proportions. We're talking Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah, Keith Urban, Rod Stewart, Steve Martin (?), Santana, KISS, Cyndi Lauper, and Lionel Ritchie. The night was capped off with a jaw dropping collaboration between the contestants (really only Lambert was audible) and rock royalty Queen.

Beyond the magical musical moments, the highlight of the whole show was Bikini Girl vs. Kara. When DioGuardi came down that staircase, belting out her song and whipping out her bodacious bod, I almost lost my gay cookies. Clip below:

Despite the flagrant miscarriage of justice, I think Lambert is the real winner. Time, ticket, and record sales will prove us right.

I was so shocked when Kris' name came out of Ryan's mouth! I really did think the 100 million votes were toward Adam. Honestly, Adam is very talented vocally so no matter what he will have a phenemonal career. Such a strong voice that big names are going to want to work with him, I'm sure. However, Kris is talented instrumentally, he lacks in voice but when have we ever seen anything like Adam on A.I. before? No one truly stands a chance against him, although his loss proved all viewers wrong.

I wanted Adam to win, but the fact that he didn't make's me more confident that he will hopefully chose a great label and people to work with. Normally second runners up turn out having better careers and there is no doubt about his. However, I wouldn't compare Kris to past idol winners that have failed careers because the competition, viewers, and music have evolved to much for that. Let alone, you can't compare his talent, personality, and voice to those of Fantasia the Lamb or Ruben Teddy Bear that sweats profusely.
