FIU picks Mark Rosenberg as new president

Mark Rosenberg, a beloved 33-year Florida International University professor and administrator on Saturday became the school's fifth president.

Rosenberg, 59, sailed into the post after fellow finalist Carlos Santiago, chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, unexpectedly withdrew from the race two hours before a final vote on both men was to be taken.

In a room full of supporters, FIU's board of trustees voted to have Rosenberg take over the school's reins from long-time president Modesto ''Mitch'' Maidique.

The move by Santiago cleared the path for Rosenberg, FIU's former provost and most recently chancellor of Florida's state education system, to assume the post.
