American Idol: Post #1

Another January, another start to a long journey down the abyss of reality TV. I'm not proud of this but I watch American Idol. 'Tis true. For the last few years, it's been a dirty little secret.

I'm fully aware that it caters to the lowest common denominator. I'm painfully aware that Ryan Seacrest is a boil on the butt of humanity. And I won't deny that the show is about as relevant as Sarah Palin, nowadays. But despite all its shortcomings, I'm glued every season.

I love it because I love to judge the talent. I love getting to know pre-packaged, edited, and sound-bited strangers with a "story." I love it because it's very much a family-uniting activity on weeknights. I love it because they showcase good, old acts like Barry Manilow and Donna Summer. I love it because of Paula Abdul. But above all, I love rooting for my favorites. World, I love American Idol!

Having watched the first episode, I can already see Kara DioGuardi being a new favorite. I was a little skeptical about her at first. I didn't want anyone taking Paula's spotlight. But I realize now that Paula's craziness knows no bounds. It looks like there's enough to go around, after all. So here's to another season.
