Israel Grants Adoption to Gay Couple, Gives Child Citizenship

Image
Israel has granted its first adoption to a same-sex couple : "The landmark case involves a Cambodia-born boy, now eight years old, who was adopted in 2000 in the United States by two men who hold American and Israeli citizenship. Following his adoption, the boy received American citizenship and was also converted to Judaism. The parents returned to Israel shortly after the adoption, but their applications to the Interior Ministry to recognize the adoption and grant their child citizenship were unsuccessful. Since 2001, the child has lived in Israel on a temporary residence visa that is extended annually." In February, Israel's attorney general Menahem Mazuz said in a landmark legal opinion that same-sex couples should be allowed to adopt . This is the first instance that it has been granted. The child was also granted Israeli citizenship. (Via Towleroad )

Update: Shot Bank Teller Loses Twins

Image
(Pictured: Jason and Katherin Shuffield) Indianapolis, IN: The twins a pregnant bank teller was carrying when she was shot during a robbery this week have died, the Marion County coroner's office said Friday . One of Katherin Shuffield's twins was born dead, and the other died after birth, said Marion County's chief deputy coroner, Alfarena Ballew. One death happened Thursday night, and the other Friday morning, the coroner's office told 6News' Jack Rinehart. Shuffield, 30, of Franklin, was five months pregnant when she was shot in the lower abdomen Tuesday in a robbery at Huntington National Bank, 2030 N. Post Road. Police said a gunman entered the bank, jumped the teller counter and shot Shuffield before taking money and leaving. Shuffield's husband, Jason, said in a statement that his wife remained in critical condition at Methodist Hospital. "Katherin's recovery is our top priority," he said. Officials had said no bullet struck the fetuses, but...

Masturbation may prevent prostate cancer

Image
Frequent masturbation may help men cut their risk of contracting prostate cancer, Australian researchers have found. It is believed that carcinogens may build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly, BBC News reported on Wednesday. The researchers surveyed more than 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer, and 1,250 men who had not. They found that men who had ejaculated the most between the ages of 20 and 50 were the least likely to get cancer. Men who ejaculated more than five times each week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer. Sexual intercourse may not have the same effect because of the higher risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, which could in turn raise the risk of cancer. "Had we been able to remove ejaculations associated with sexual intercourse, there should have been an even stronger protective effect of ejaculations," Graham Giles of the Cancer Council Victoria, who led the researchers, said in the article. The pros...
