LGBT community celebrates Spirit Day today

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will join millions of lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender people and allies by participating in Spirit Day today. Wearing purple on this day symbolizes support for LGBT people and against bullying of LGBT teens.

GLAAD is working with organizations including the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the PACER Center, GLSEN, GSA Network, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), PFLAG and The Trevor Project as part of National Bullying Prevention Month to inspire Americans to wear purple on Spirit Day. In addition to wearing purple today, supporters will be changing their Facebook and Twitter photos purple today through October 20 by using free applications to turn profile photos purple at www.glaad.org/spiritday. GLAAD partnered with Mobli to create a Spirit Day channel for Mobli apps on Android, Blackberry and iPhone products.

Cher, Heather Graham, Gloria Allred, Ricky Martin, Joel McHale, Suze Orman, Joan Rivers, Chaz Bono, Mia Farrow, Julianne Moore, and cast members of TeenNick’s Degrassi will be wearing purple.

Hosts of CBS’ The Talk, ABC’s The View, Noticiero Telemundo and NBC’s Access Hollywood Live will join Conan O’Brien, Wendy Williams, CNBC’s Jim Cramer and Simon Hobbs, Dr. Drew of CNN, E!’s Marc Malkin, and Thomas Roberts of MSNBC by wearing purple on-air.

[Editor's note] Jerry Curl is happy to participate in today's Spirit Day. As a gay blogger, I can't tell you how sick I am of posting horrific stories of young kids killing themselves over being exactly who they are. And while I applaud so many celebrities and corporations for their added support, I know the real solution to this problem is fostering a sense of tolerance and respect; not only in schools and workplaces-- but in religious and political circles as well. Here's hoping for a brighter future for us all.

Regarding the Barry Manilow concert in Coral Gables

[ Editor's note ] Three monumental things have happened to me at the BankUnited Center. In 2004, my high school held its graduation ceremony there. In 2008, I heard presidential nominee Barack Obama speak about the future. And this past Saturday night, I saw the incomparable Barry Manilow perform in concert. To say that Barry remains every bit the superstar I was hoping for is putting it mildly. At 67 years young, he brought all the magic, the smiles, and the bandstand boogie he's famous for and then some. Funny, talented and charmingly self-deprecating, Barry Manilow remains without equal. Ric Alonso resigns from pageant association after porn revelation

Kevin Hogan wasn't the only person this week ambushed out of a job for his participation in the gay adult film industry. FOX News reports : Ric Alonso and his partner of 21 years, Ernie Koneck, have both been both prominent power players in the Southern California Scholarship Association — an incorporated not-for-profit association — which produces the Miss Hollywood pageant, an official preliminary to Miss California, and a feeder to Miss America. Alonso is listed as the first “major sponsor” for 2011 scholarship donations, while partner Koneck has been the pageantry point of contact and is featured in photographs alongside the smiling young sashed pageant contestants. On Tuesday, Alonso was exposed by RadarOnline as adult film actor and producer "Jake Cruise".
