Tony Bennett becomes oldest living artist to top Billboard 200
ArtsBeat reports: Last week Tony Bennett, 85, released Duets II, which features his collaborations with Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, Carrie Underwood and many others younger than him. [Ed. note: I can report that the album is indeed fantastic]. He also sang a belated birthday concert at the Metropolitan Opera that was attended by Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Now the sales tallies are in, and Duets II sold 179,000 copies, according to the tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan, easily beating titles by Lady Antebellum, Adele and Lil Wayne to top Billboard’s standard album chart.
(Before Mr. Bennett’s achievement with Duets II, the oldest living artist to reach the top of the chart was Bob Dylan with Together Through Life in 2009, when Mr. Dylan was 67.)
Last week’s top album, Lady Antebellum’s Own the Night, fell to No. 2 with 125,000 units sold, a 64% decline. Adele’s 21, by far the biggest hit of the year, also fell one spot, to No. 3, but its 117,000 albums sold represented only a 2% drop from the previous week.
The teen pop singer Demi Lovato opened at No. 4 with her third album, Unbroken, with 96,000 units [Ed. note: Also a terribly terrific album], and Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV was in fifth place this week with 84,000.
