FIU wins thriller in Detroit
The Miami Herald reports: In a season defined by new experiences, FIU literally saved the best for last: A game -- and a season -- that came down to an unbelievable drive, and field-storming field goal.
In just their ninth season, the Golden Panthers mounted a rally for ages, stunning Toledo 34-32 on a 34-yard field goal by Jack Griffin as time expired.
"We're very emotional right now. For us, what we've achieved is brand new,'' an ecstatic Mario Cristobal said in the wild moments that followed. "That's awesome right there. That's awesome.''
"What these guys have achieved is historical, but they've also set the bar very high,'' Cristobal said. "We had a chance to make a statement on national TV, and I surely thought we did. This is the standard for FIU football, to play and win championship football games.''
