Ansel Adams photograph sets auction record

A sale of photographs by Ansel Adams and Lucas Samaras has set records at a New York auction for the artists.

The records came yesterday on the first of a two-day Sotheby's auction from the Polaroid corporate collection. Some 800 more photographs were being offered today.

Monday's sale total was $7.1 million, exceeding the top $4.5 million estimate.

Adams' "Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park" (pictured above) sold for $722,000. The auctioneer said that shattered his 2006 auction record of $609,600 for "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico," from 1941.

A Samaras work, "Ultra-Large (Hands)," went for $194,500. The previous record for the artist was $132,000 for "Transformation: Eyeglasses" set in 1989.
