Florida jobless rate hits 11 percent
Florida's unemployment rate edged up in September, rising three-tenths of a point to 11 percent, the state labor department announced today.
That's the highest since October 1975, and represents just over one million Floridians out of work.
County rates were as follows: Miami-Dade, 11.3 percent; Broward, 9.8 percent; Palm Beach, 11.7 percent; Monroe, 7 percent.
Unlike statewide numbers, the county figures are not adjusted to remove the effects of normal seasonal variations, such as summer layoffs at hotels.
The federal government will release an adjusted figure for Miami-Dade and other large U.S. counties next week.
