‘Avenue Q’ to close in September
As the lyrics to a song from the Broadway musical “Avenue Q” point out, nothing lasts, and life, work, happiness and discomfort are only for now. So it goes for the musical itself: the show, an adult themed upgrade of educational children’s programs like “Sesame Street,” will play its last performance on Sept. 13, its publicists said Monday in a news release.
The show, which features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty, taught Broadway a lesson or two when it opened at the Golden Theater in 2003: in a season that also saw the openings of attention-grabbing productions like “Wicked” and “The Boy from Oz,” the scrappy puppet show was the unexpected winner of the Tony Award for best musical. At its closing, “Avenue Q” will have played 2,534 performances and 22 previews.
