Nick Jonas picks his Oscar favorites

You don’t become a pop, television and Broadway star by the age of 19 without a healthy sense of competition. So when it came to his Oscar ballot, Nick Jonas went with what he thinks will win, not necessarily what he wants.

“I’m quite a competitive person,” he confirmed on the phone from his Manhattan apartment. One-third of the Jonas Brothers pop act, he started out in theater and moved on to music and Disney television series work with his family. Now he’s returned to his roots, starring on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

On the ballot he filled out for the New York Times, he chose The Artist. A lot.

“Here’s the deal,” he explained. “I picked what I think is going to win because I wanted to be as close to right as I could be.”

But his love for Woody Allen left him feeling conflicted. “In these last two years I’ve sort of fallen more in love with his work,” he said. “Now, living here in New York, I feel like I’m in a Woody Allen movie all the time. You know, the sense that you’re living ‘Annie Hall’ is the overall vibe I get.”

He spoke more about his choices — for the Oscar and for the stage. Here are excerpts from the conversation.
