"People tune into the 'Today' show to see if the world is still there."

[Editor's note] One not-so-special morning about 15 years ago, I turned the channel from Captain Planet to Matt and Katie and never turned back.

In many ways, the Today show has been instrumental in my growing up and growing aware of the world around me. My love of reading and reporting news can be traced to the way this show delivers its news; clear, concise, hard-hitting, and (contrary to popular belief) unbiased. They are my go-to source for all things royal, political, Olympic, tragic, uplifting, and authentically American. Indeed, they are the standard by which I judge other news sources. I shudder to think what my Halloweens and Thanksgivings would like without the Today show anchors holding court.

They’re what make this show such an enjoyable experience to watch. I live for the candid and impromptu moments shared by the folks behind the desk and on the plaza. They are so charming to wake up to. I may gripe about Ann Curry on occasion, but even that comes from a place of love. She’s like the kid sister you’re mandated to pick on. Speaking of, did you see that tacky Today logo-emblazoned dress she had on today? Woof!

Perhaps the best part of the show for me is Matt Laur. I happen to think Matt is the luckiest man on the planet. Not only has he gotten the pleasure of sitting next to both Katie Couric and Meredith Viera (both of whom I adore), but he’s traveled all over the planet. Whenever I’m asked what I’d like to do with my life, I always answer “Matt Laur’s job.” He’s the Dorothy Zbornak of this trope and I think he’s pretty perfect. This whole show is pretty perfect.

In short, happy 60th birthday, Today show. No one does it better than you guys.
