McKellen re-enlists as Gandalf for Hobbit films

ArtsBeat reports: Hobbit fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Ian McKellen has agreed to reprise his role as Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s two-picture adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit.

Mr. McKellen portrayed Gandalf, the tall (especially when compared with a Hobbit) wizard in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and garnered an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in the first of the three films, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The adventures in Middle Earth begin with The Hobbit, which is scheduled to start shooting in New Zealand next month. Mr. Jackson was eager to sign up the same actors from the trilogy and has so far been successful. Andy Serkis has agreed to return as Gollum, Elijah Wood will play Frodo, and Cate Blanchett will appear as Galadriel. Mr. Jackson is hoping that Orlando Bloom will also agree to return to play the elf Legolas.
